LEXINGTON, Ky. – Freshman guard De’Aaron Fox left Saturday’s contest with No. 24 South Carolina midway through the first half with a right ankle injury and did not return. Though he was listed as questionable through the remainder of the half, he came out of the locker room in street clothes and a walking boot for the second half.
Kentucky head coach John Calipari said after the game there was no swelling, but for safety precautions they’re still keeping the Freshman All-American candidate in a walking boot. Calipari also said he didn’t know any further details about the future of his star point guard.
When Fox hobbled into the locker room, Kentucky saw its lead in the process of shrinking from 17 points to three points against the Gamecocks. The Wildcats adjusted on the fly and cruised in the second half to an 85-69 victory.
“(Fox) changes the game as soon as he comes in, and as soon as he goes out,” Malik Monk said. “But we had to adjust real fast and play on our own without him.”
Monk said his teammate was in good spirits despite the injury but is unsure of the severity of Fox’s injury. Derek Willis echoed Monk’s statement.
“I haven't really heard anything on his injury, or really what's going on with him," Willis said. "He's the starting point guard. He's fast. He does a lot in transition -- I know we're the best transition team in the nation -- so we'll just have to adjust. It's always the next man up."
In Fox’s eight minutes of play, he scored 6 points on 3-of-3 shooting and had one rebound and one assist.
