CAMP RECRUITING NOTES
"CatsIllustrated.com's Camp Notebook series continues, this time shifting gears from scouting and analysis to recruiting scoop.
There was plenty of chatter before, during and after the event, as players converged with coaches, mentors and others, and CatsIllustrated.com has plenty of scoop.
Louisville commit Trenell Troutman hasn't shown any real signs of wavering from the Cardinals. Then again, he's not done anything to shut down speculation that he's keeping options open, either. ..." (read more)
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
"Back in October, I was assigned to write UK’s fall preview for D1baseball.com. In that report, I wrote that first-year head coach Nick Mingione might spend this season trying to find enough answers to contend in 2018.
My reasons were simple. UK had to replace over 300 innings worth of pitching and outside of Evan White, the offense lacked proven hitters. Not expecting UK to contend for anything seemed like a safe bet. In the preseason, UK was voted to finish tied for fourth place in the SEC East.
But here in Louisville, where UK’s season came to an end after a 6-2 loss to Louisville in its first ever super regional, this team not expected to do much of anything will go down as the best this school has ever seen. It didn’t end in Omaha like the team and fans hoped, but the vast improvement UK made in the first season will be imperative in the future."
MONK, BAM, HUMPHRIES UPDATES
"The New York Knicks hold the eighth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and it has placed them in the position to grab one of the top prospects in this year’s crop of talent.
With that in mind, Ian Begley of ESPN is reporting that the Knicks are set to hold a workout with former Kentucky point guard Malik Monk next week."

"The Portland Trail Blazers held their fourth predraft workout on Saturday, evaluating six NBA draft hopefuls at the practice facility in Tualatin.
The headliners of the group were 6-foot-10 center Bam Adebayo from Kentucky, 6-6 forward Dillon Brooks from Oregon and 6-7 guard Terrance Ferguson, a 6-7 wing who played professionally in Australia last season."

“I didn’t really play all that much at Kentucky, so I know that I have to come in and show a lot and show my skill set,” Humphries said after his Nuggets workout.
“A lot of the teams don’t really know what I bring to a team. So, it’s really cool to be able to do that and give myself an opportunity to show what I could potentially bring.”
TOP PERFORMERS
"CatsIllustrated.com listed top performers last year and it included the likes of Jerome Carvin, Jarren Williams and Clevan Thomas, who have gone on to much more football success.
Here's our stab at some of the top performers from Saturday night."

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
"Before, during and after the camp plenty of current Kentucky football players could be spotted in and around Kroger Field.
Some of those present included: Running back A.J. Rose, wide receiver Kayaune Ross, receiver Clevan Thomas, defensive linemen Ja'Quize Cross and Tymere Dubose, offensive linemen Tate Leavitt and George Asafo-Adjei, linebacker Jamin Davis, defensive backs Davonte Robinson, Tobias Gilliam, Mike Edwards, Lonnie Johnson and Cedrick Dort.
Before the camp it was Asafo-Adjei who seemed to be spending the most time with prized linebacker target Xavier Peters. That's not too surprising as Asafo-Adjei attended Lakota West in West Chester, Ohio, the same school Peters is at now. Vince Marrow could be seen zooming around on a golf cart carrying Peters, but he was otherwise around players. Peters also bumped into Rose at one point before the camp. ..." (read more)
SQUARE, UPSHAW IN FOCUS
"It was clear from the moment that linebacker DeAndre Square and tight end Keaton Upshaw arrived, during registration, that they were going to be focal points. Coaches, staffers and commitments congregated around the two, accompanied them just about wherever they went, and made sure they were having a good time.
Square was accompanied by his mother, and it seems like getting her approval for UK was a big reason for his decision to visit. Square competed for the entire duration of the camp, which was impressive considering he already had an offer and didn't have much to prove. He seems soft-spoken and humble, and was focused throughout.
For a player who is listed at 6-foot-1 (that measurement seems on point), the eye test says Square has a very long wing span. He is definitely lean; no doubt about that. But he should be able to carry 10-15 additional pounds by the time he gets to college. ..."

SEASON OVER
"The run is over. After reaching its first super regional in school history, UK was eliminated from the postseason by Louisville in a 6-2 loss. The Cardinals are in the College World Series for the fourth time in 11 years. UK finished Nick Mingione's first season with a 43-23 record.
Here are the main storylines."

"Near the end of his press conference to discuss Kentucky's 6-2 season-ending loss to Louisville on Saturday, coach Nick Mingione had to pause, settle his emotions and find the right words to describe what his first group of Wildcats had meant to him.
"These guys, I can look all of you in the eye and tell you, I've never seen them give one day away," Mingione said. "Every single one of those kids could not be better gentlemen to my wife and my 2 1/2-year-old. So when you talk about changing somebody's life? They changed mine."

PROGRAM AND MINGIONE CHANGING
“Change is hard,” Mingione said.
It’s been less than 365 days since Mingione, a former Mississippi State assistant, was named Kentucky’s coach. The Wildcats began the season with little outside expectations, and ended it in front of a record crowd on a Super Regional stage at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville."

PRESSING CONCERNS
"The positivity continued into the offseason. Stoops secured a 2017 recruiting class ranked No. 26 in the country by Rivals.com. The coach agreed to a two-year contract extension with UK that runs through 2022.
Yet amidst the UK football good vibrations, there are some dark clouds with the potential to block the emerging sun. For Stoops to keep UK on an upward arc in 2017, answers will have to be found in three worrisome areas."
