Will OT John Young become part of UK's in-state lineman tradition?

Class of 2020 offensive tackle John Young, of Christian Academy-Louisville, grew up a Kentucky fan.

Needless to say, it was a big moment for the 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive tackle when he landed an offer from the Wildcats during the program's junior day on Saturday.

While the 2019 class of Commonwealth talent is drawing all the looks, the 2020 class isn't too bad, either. Young's emergence, mostly recent, only makes the present crop of sophomores even more impressive as a group.

Cats Illustrated spoke with Young at length following his trip to Kentucky, which is when he picked up his offer. Here's the conversation in full.

Cats Illustrated: Take us through how the offer came about and how you found out about it on Saturday.

John Young: So it came from Coach (Eddie) Gran, the offensive coordinator. He sat me and my dad down in his office and just gave us the great news. Then after we were done talking to him we got to talking to Coach (Mark) Stoops in his office. He just said they really liked my film and we had a good time talking with everybody there.

Cats Illustrated: Was that your first time visiting Kentucky as a recruit?

Young: Yes, my first time.

Cats Illustrated: So what were your thoughts on the junior day itself?

Young: I loved it. I loved all the coaches. They were all very nice to me. The facilities were great. The locker room was great. The basketball game went great. It was just a really good day. I loved all the facilities.

Cats Illustrated: Did you get to spend much time talking to John Schlarman?

Young: Oh yes, I got to spend a lot of time with him there. He did talk a lot about me playing tackle. I measured in at 6'7 and he said it's really hard to find people with that kind of height who can play tackle. He brought up all the in-state kids they've got, like Landon Young and Drake Jackson, and how he can see me fitting in just like one of those guys, and how I can fit into their offense with how they run the ball and play an SEC style of football.

Cats Illustrated: Did you grow up as a Kentucky fan, Louisville fan, a fan of someone else?

Young: I've always been a Kentucky fan. Growing up I watched Kentucky football a lot. I've been watching Kentucky football my entire life. I've been to games, I just haven't been as a recruit. But I've definitely been to games there.

Cats Illustrated: Do you know any of the guys currently on the team?

Young: No, but I'm hoping to get to meet some of the offensive linemen sometime soon.

Cats Illustrated: What other schools have you visited recently?

Young: I've visited Louisville. That was a couple of weeks ago. During the season I got to visit Notre Dame and Louisville.

Cats Illustrated: Louisville has offered as well, so what are your thoughts on them and how was that visit?

Young: Great school, too. Good program and another great school.
