QB Tyson: UK's "always going to be special"

O'Fallon, Ill.— Kentucky was the first Power Five school to offer Hewitt Trussville (Ala.) quarterback Paul Tyson, the great grandson of former college football coaching legend Bear Bryant.

CatsIllustrated.com spoke with Tyson at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas on Sunday morning.

Tyson's talent is undeniable and the only knock on the 2019 quarterback, so to speak, is a lack of starting varsity experience. But he took a big step towards answering any of those questions in a recent spring scrimmage against Cordova (Tenn.), the same school that's sending defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna to Kentucky.

Hewitt Trussville put up a lot of points and racked up a lot of yards against that Cordova team, so Tyson's stock is on the rise already.

"It was great just to be able to have my first spring game behind me and it went well," Tyson told CatsIllustrated.com. "The team did really well. We scored 45 points and scored 21 points in the first five minutes of the game."

Tyson hasn't been able to visit any colleges recently because he's been busy with spring football. But with spring ball behind him, he plans on getting out on the road soon. Tyson said he will start visiting colleges on June 4 or 5. His father had previously told CatsIllustrated.com that he would be camping at Kentucky on either June 10 or 11, UK's first camp dates of the summer. Tyson confirmed that plan on Sunday, so he'll be in Lexington soon.

Because of his great grandfather's history at Kentucky the Tyson family has always had the Cats in mind, at least to some degree. So Tyson is anxious to visit.

"I do know some things about it and I know it's really something cool because the last time Kentucky won the SEC championship (outright) my great grandfather was there. So that's something really cool," Tyson said.

Tyson is grateful for Kentucky's offer and that's another reason he's excited to visit.

"Coach (Darin) Hinshaw came down to watch us throw and it was fun getting to see him," Tyson said. "I knew Coach (Eddie) Gran before that but it was fun being able to get back in touch with Kentucky.

"They're SEC and it was a huge deal to get that offer. That's always going to be something special team me. Kentucky's the first Power Five team to offer me, so that's always going to be special to me."

Alabama, NC State, Duke and North Carolina are among the other Power Five schools that have taken an early interest in Tyson.
