Recruiting Rewind

Hoak was offered by former offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and committed to the Wildcats in April 2015. He stayed committed to Kentucky despite Dawson’s firing. A big reason he stayed committed is because of Eddie Gran and Darin Hinshaw. The new coaches offered Hoak when they were at Cincinnati so both sides were comfortable with each other.

Hoak held offers from several MAC schools along with Cincinnati.

Scout Speak

Hoak has good size for a quarterback and his game is predicated on accuracy. He doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world but he can still make all the necessary throws that are required in Gran’s offense. He puts nice touch on his passes and is a smart player who looks to be a good fit in Kentucky’s offense.

Setting the Bar

Hoak should be able to redshirt in 2016 barring a complete catastrophe. The addition of Stephen Johnson gives Kentucky a legitimate contender to Drew Barker in the quarterback race. The QB battle will come down to Barker or Johnson and therefore Hoak can add more strength to his frame during his redshirt year. He did enroll early which will give him equal chance as the other quarterbacks at learning the offense.

It’s unlikely Hoak will be able to truly contend for the QB position until Barker and Johnson have both graduated. At that point 2017 quarterback commits Mac Jones and Walker Wood (who is an athlete but will get a shot at playing quarterback) will be on campus and push Hoak.
