SNELL FILM STUDY

Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran, who's well-respected in many circles, did a great job of adjusting on the fly and unearthing what may turn out to be the Southeastern Conference's next superstar, then-true freshman running back Benny Snell Jr.

Operating out of what I like to refer to as a "Power Spread," with frequent use of Cheetah personnel, Gran managed to blend quite a few concepts -- most of which aimed at bloodying noses.

SNELL HONORED

Kentucky sophomore running back Benny Snell was announced on Thursday as a preseason candidate for the 2017 Doak Walker Award. Snell, who was named as a preseason third team offense All-SEC member, set six UK freshman rushing records last season.

2014 CLASS REVISITED

It seems like every year the topic emerges. It's understandable and probably unavoidable. Expectations tend to do that.

How should we view Kentucky's 2014 recruiting class?

Writers and commentators chimed in with their takes last year. And as time goes on, there's more data to fuel whatever case someone wants to make.

JOHNSON TO OKC

After two years in the organization, Dakari Johnson appears to be getting his chance with the Thunder.

Johnson, the 7-foot center who’s spent the past two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blue in the NBA Development League, will sign a guaranteed two-year contract with the Thunder, The Vertical reported on Thursday night.

Johnson, 21, was a first-team All-NBA Development League selection this season after averaging 18.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for the Blue. He was the youngest player named to the first team.

PISTONS SIGN WILLIS

The Detroit Pistons are bringing a free agent from their Orlando Pro Summer League team to training camp.

The Pistons are signing Kentucky power forward Derek Willis to a one-year deal, with the intent of making him one of their affiliate players at their Gatorade League affiliate in Grand Rapids.

That means Willis will be brought to training camp, which beings Sept. 26.

DABBLING IN POLITICS

John Calipari is in the nation's Capitol this week to support a longtime friend and donor to the University of Kentucky in her bid to become the U.S. ambassador to Canada.

He announced his visit in a cryptic tweet on Thursday:

"Well I'm in D.C. getting ready to go to the Capitol, (to) do some special things. Have a great day."

FREEZE OUT IN OXFORD

Hugh Freeze lasted five seasons as head coach at Ole Miss before he resigned amid scandal on Thursday evening.

While the Mississippi native was a resounding success on the field during his tenure, winning nearly 60 percent of his games and reaching a Sugar Bowl, off the field the program had become the subject of an NCAA investigation and Freeze's own personal conduct ultimately ended up costing him his job.
