Redshirt freshman cornerback Marcus Caffey is academically ineligible for the 2012 season, head coach Joker Phillips announced on Friday morning.
Caffey was recruited as a running back and worked out with the offense in 2011 but moved to corner before spring practice. He earned a starting spot opposite senior Cartier Rice in the secondary and was expected to be a major player in 2012.
To replace him, senior Martavius Neloms will move from safety to cornerback. Neloms spent his freshman year in 2009 at cornerback before moving to safety. He started at safety in 2010 and 2011.
Coaches raved about Caffey's size (5-11, 192) and ability as a cover corner in spring. The Wildcats lost a pair of senior starters at cornerback following the 2011 season.
Freshman cornerback Shawn Blaylock will miss the 2012 season. He's scheduled to undergo knee surgery for an injury suffered in high school on Aug. 7.
To bolster the secondary further, true freshman wide receiver J.D. Harmon will move to cornerback, Phillips said.
