Kentucky offered an athlete from Alabama early this week and he spoke with Cats Illustrated immediately thereafter to discuss its significance.
Georgia, Louisville, Troy and Toledo had offered Malik Cunningham going into this week and Kentucky became offer number five on Monday.
Although the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Montgomery (Ala.) Park Crossing prospect is listed as a dual-threat quarterback, he's not being recruited to take snaps in Lexington. Kentucky's already got commitments from pro-style quarterback Mac Jones and dual-threat quarterback/athlete Walker Wood. Cunningham, like those two, is a Class of 2017 recruit.
"That (Kentucky offer) was in the morning," Cunningham said, referring to the good news on Monday. "That was the first time I had talked to them. Actually, I had heard from a recruiter a little while ago. We talked about the season and we caught up. But they just offered."
Cunningham said Kentucky was up front about offering him as an athlete and he seemed to be just fine with that.
"I can play receiver and safety but most likely receiver," he said.
He last played receiver in ninth grade, two years ago, although Cunningham did say that he's found himself running in the secondary trying to make some plays when the coaching staff has reached into their bag of tricks.
Derrick Ansley is Cunningham's recruiter.
"They like my athleticism and how talented I am," Cunningham said. "That's all they've told me. We haven't talked about Kentucky. We haven't got that far yet. But we're texting right now on Twitter.
"He's actually from Alabama so that means we have something in common. That's pretty cool. I saw him when he came down last spring but that's been about it," he said.
Cunningham has unofficially visited Alabama, Georgia and Troy this year. He's visited Auburn three times as well.
"Clemson's like my dream school," he admitted. "So I'm looking forward to (getting that offer). I like Mississippi State, Florida and some others, too."
Last year Cunningham visited Auburn "a few times," but he hasn't been out of the Deep South for unofficials yet.
Given that both Kentucky and Louisville have offered there's an increased likelihood that Cunningham will make a trip to the Bluegrass State. He can kill two birds with one stone and hit both campuses on the same "northern" swing.
"I think I will visit," he said. "I think I can go to the junior day and I might try to make a game before the season's over with."
