Coming off a debut season which saw him earn SEC Coach of the Year honors, Kentucky's Nick Mingione has been rewarded with a new contract extension.

The new deal, announced Friday by UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart, runs through the 2022 season and will pay Mingione approximately $575,000 a year with incentive opportunities. He made $400,000 last season.

“The progress our program has made in one year under Nick’s leadership is outstanding,” Barnhart said in a statement released by UK. “We are committed to making Kentucky baseball a consistent winner both in the Southeastern Conference and on a national level and he is the coach to make that happen. We are excited to have Nick and his family in Lexington for a long time.”

UK’s two assistants – Jim Belanger and Roland Fanning – have also agreed in principle to new two-year deals to keep Mingione’s coaching staff intact.

Mingione led the Wildcats to 43 wins and their first-ever trip to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2017. UK won 19 games in SEC play, the second-highest total in school history, after being picked in the bottom half of the league in the preseason.

"I'm very appreciative of the commitment Mitch Barnhart, President (Eli) Capilouto and the University of Kentucky have shown to our baseball program," Mingione said. "My wife and I love Lexington and could not be more excited about being a part of this university and community. I'm also thrilled the rest of the coaching staff is being rewarded for their remarkable efforts in our first season here."

The amendment also outlines new incentive compensation for Mingione. He will receive $25,000 in each year UK reaches the NCAA Tournament, $100,000 in each year UK reaches Super Regionals, $150,000 in each year UK reaches the College World Series, and $200,000 if UK wins the national championship. Mingione will receive $2,500 in each year the baseball team achieves an Academic Progress Rate of .985 or better. These incentive payments are cumulative.

Mingione’s broadcasting and endorsement compensation also stands to increase each year based on incentive compensation. Broadcasting and endorsement compensation will increase by 33 percent of the previous year’s cumulative earned incentive payment, with annual increases capped at $100,000.

Mingione will owe the university a buyout payment if he elects to terminate the agreement. The buyout starts at $1 million if he terminates the agreement on or prior to July 1, 2018 and decreases by $200,000 in each subsequent year.
