By this point it's pretty obvious that Kentucky could use some help on the defensive line.
To that end Jimmy Brumbaugh and the coaching staff are searching far and wide for potential contributors in 2017.
Brandon Henderson is a junior college defensive lineman currently at Georgia Military College. It's his second tour at a JUCO, having previously attended Northeast Mississippi. Before that Henderson attended high school in Greenwood, S.C.
Wherever Henderson transfers after this year he'll have two years to play two seasons of college football. But in spite of his limited eligibility, Kentucky has a lot of interest. That says something about how they feel about their defensive line situation, but also something about how the coaches feel about Henderson.
Henderson is a 6-foot-5, 262-pound defensive end prospect. Kentucky has had success with junior college defensive linemen in the Stoops era, with Za'Darius Smith reaching the NFL and others like Melvin Lewis, C.J. Johnson and now Courtney Miggins becoming major contributors at Kentucky.
Henderson hasn't taken any official visits yet but he has unofficially visited Georgia Southern and Georgia State.
Georgia Military College just finished their fourth game of the 2016 season. Henderson says he has room for improvement although he's "doing okay." Before the start of the school's 2016 campaign Brumbaugh reached out to Henderson and made his interest clear.
"Coach Brumbaugh, the defensive line coach, started recruiting me I think during fall camp," Henderson told Cats Illustrated. "During the week right before our first regular season game. He was asking me things like whether I'd be graduating next year, if I can come in and play right away and things like that. He was pretty much talking to me about the length he's looking for in a D-End and how he likes the way I play. It seems like he likes me as an overall play."
Kentucky hasn't offered yet and Brumbaugh has addressed that in some form or fashion.
"He told me they really want me to play some week so maybe they'd come up before they offer. He said they're really interested," Henderson said.
The opportunity to play in the SEC would be a big deal, the player said.
"That would be pretty big in my recruiting, probably," Henderson said. "That would be my first SEC offer. I would probably consider them a whole lot.
"I like Coach Brumbaugh so far. It seems like he's kind of like a player's coach. He's somebody you can talk to about life and whatever you're going through."
Junior college transfers, or prospective transfers, generally regard playing time as a major factor given their limited eligibility. Henderson is no different.
"It's a very big deal for me because I've got two years to play two," he said. "I want to go to a school where I can play two years. I don't want to pick a school just because I can walk right in and start because I know I'll have to work up to it, but I want to be able to take my two years at a school and work my way to the NFL Draft."
Northern Illinois, Toledo, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Western Kentucky and Houston have all offered Henderson.
