Kentucky has added another player to the basketball roster via the transfer route.

Jacob Toppin, a 6-foot-8 forward from Rhode Island, announced Thursday via his Instagram account that he will be joining the Wildcats. The younger brother of Dayton standout Obi Toppin, he chose UK over Oregon and Iowa State.

As a freshman at Rhode Island, Toppin averaged 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds, shooting 42.6% from the field, 24.5% from 3-point range, and 64.4% at the free-throw line. The Ossining, N.Y., native had double-figure performances against SEC foes Alabama (11) and LSU (10).

Big Blue Nation will now wait to see what the NCAA does with its highly publicized transfer eligibility waiver rule. Many expect a one-time exemption to be passed, although it may not go live until the 2021-22 season.

Some, however, believe the legislation will be pushed through with immediate eligibility for transfers. If that happens, Toppin could play for the Cats this fall.

Toppin joins Creighton guard Davion Mintz, a graduate transfer who can play immediately for UK, as recent additions to John Calipari's program.

After losing eight players from this year's roster, Kentucky has begun the process of reloading. Calipari has six players in the nation's No. 1 recruiting class to go along with Toppin and Mintz. He'll also have sophomore forward Keion Brooks and redshirt freshman Dontaie Allen back from this year's team.
