Storylines

Vanderbilt is just 8-7 on the year but the Commodores are 2-1 to start SEC play and have held court six times in seven home games this year. The road (1-3) and neutral sites (1-3) have been the Vanderbilt's problem.

The Commodores started the season with a 95-71 loss to Marquette in the Veterans Classic played in Annapolis, Md. Vanderbilt has also participated in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational. The first two of those games were played in Nashville, with the Commodores defeating Norfolk State (75-52) and losing to Bucknell (75-72), the latter as their lone home loss of the season. The last two games of that tournament were played in Las Vegas, where Butler downed Vanderbilt (76-66) before the Commodores bounced back to take down Santa Clara (76-66).

In their last game Vanderbilt lost to Alabama in Tuscaloosa by a narrow 59-56 margin.

In spite of their seven losses Vanderbilt is ranked No. 66 overall by KenPom and No. 52 according to the latest RPI.

Vanderbilt ranks No. 191 nationally averaging 73.4 points per game. They allow 68.7 points per game. Vanderbilt shoots just .432 from the field on the season and their opponents are .425 from the floor. The Commodores do shoot the three-ball well (.403), as is customary for them, but their opponents are also proficient from long range (.365). Vanderbilt is averaging 10.2 made three-pointers per game. They are averaging 13 made three-pointers per SEC game through three contests. The Commodores are also strong from the free throw line (.774).

The Commodores do not force many turnovers on average (11.6), nor are they a strong shot blocking squad (3.9 per game).

Notably, Vanderbilt has outscored its opponents by an average of nearly five points in the first half of games this season, but opponents are outscoring Vanderbilt by a basket, also on average, in the second half.

Only Tennessee (68) has defeated Kentucky more times in history than Vanderbilt (47).

While Vanderbilt won last year's meeting, which was also played in Nashville, the Cats have regained the advantage in the head-to-head series of late. Kentucky has won 8 of the last 11 games it has played against Vanderbilt. However, Vanderbilt has defeated Kentucky 10 times since the 2005-06 season (12-10 UK edge in that time span). Kentucky has been ranked No. 1 in five of John Calipari's games against the Commodores.

Kentucky ranks second nationally in scoring (94.0 PPG) and remains the No. 1 overall team in the nation according to Ken Pomeroy's rankings. In those Pomeroy rankings the Cats rank No. 3 in adjusted offense, No. 7 in adjusted defense and No. 13 in adjusted tempo, with the last number falling slightly following the Arkansas game, even though Kentucky scored 97 points against the Razorbacks. Kentucky is ranked No. 6 in the RPI, behind Villanova, Baylor, Florida, Kansas and Minnesota.

Kentucky has played just two road games so far in the 2016-17 season. The Cats lost their road opener to Louisville (73-70) but rolled past Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss., with a 99-76 victory. The Cats are averaging 99 points per game in SEC play.
