Kentucky's coaches were on the road checking out high school action on Friday and what they saw resulted in an offer to a defensive back.
Think UK will slow down in its pursuit of Ohio talent in the 2017 class?
Think again.
The Cats already have three Ohio commitments in that class and they recently offered another player that figures to become a major target. That's Amir Riep, a 6-foot, 180-pound cornerback from Cincinnati (Ohio) Colerain.
Cats Illustrated told you before anyone else that the UK staff would be watching Riep. And immediately after Colerain's game we heard from sources that good news was probably coming for the 2017 defensive back. True to form, the offer went out.
Riep has a lot of the attributes the Kentucky coaches are looking for. The staff had a presence at Riep's game on Friday but it wasn't their first exposure to him.
"(Derrick) Ansley came to (his) game," Riep told Cats Illustrated over the weekend.
But it wasn't Ansley who extended the offer. It helps that Kentucky's defensive backs coach had a chance to evaluate Riep in person. After all, that's the coach that would be working with Riep.
Vince Marrow spoke with Riep after the Cats watched him.
"Just saying they had been interested in my film but wanted to come check out a game before officially offering," Riep said.
Riep has been in contact with the UK staff so he knows what they like about him.
"Coach Ansley said he loves the way I play and my game," he said. "(How he) goes man, can hit and I run around making plays everywhere on the field."
Cats Illustrated had previously reported, at the start of September, that Ansley had reached out to Riep. At that time Riep recalled his camp experience at Kentucky. Ansley had kept him a little longer, with some other players, and said that he would be watching his progress as a junior.
"I like it a lot. It's real cool down there," Riep said at the time.
He has started every year of high school football, first at Roger Bacon as a freshman and now for the second consecutive year at Colerain. He camped at Ohio State over the summer.
