Much will be made of Saturday's renewal of an otherwise obsolete rivalry between Kentucky and Indiana.
Cats Illustrated takes a look at some of the best games in the history of the series between the Wildcats and Hoosiers.
Kentucky leads the all-time series against the Hoosier 32-24. That's a modest advantage for Kentucky, but it's actually a sign of how powerful the Indiana brand was (i.e. how successful the program once was in Bob Knight's best years), considering the fact that the Cats are 17-5 against the Hoosiers since 1991.
That means at one point, at the dawn of the 1990's, Indiana held a 19-15 series advantage against Kentucky.
Kentucky is 3-1 against Indiana in the NCAA Tournament with wins in the 1975 regional finals and the regional semifinals of the 1983 and 2012 tournaments. Indiana defeated Kentucky in the Mideast regional finals of the 1973 NCAA Tournament.
Here's our list of the best games in the history of the series:
Indiana 73, Kentucky 72 | 2011, Bloomington (Ind.)
Lest any of our Kentucky fan readers assumed this would only be a list of UK wins, this game must be mentioned. The shot that gave Kentucky its only regular season loss during a national championship season led to euphoria and perhaps a scene that contributed to UK's desire to no longer play home-and-home games in this series.
Indiana was 9-15 from three-point range while Kentucky did almost all of its work inside the arc. Christian Watford led the Hoosiers in scoring (20) and tossed in the game-winning dagger at the buzzer.
Kentucky 82, Indiana 76 | 1987, Indianapolis (Ind.)
Kentucky may have been viewed as the game's favorite but not by much. This matchup pitted the No. 2 Wildcats against the No. 5 Hoosiers in a game between two teams seen as national championship contenders.
Eddie Sutton's Cats won the game in overtime with Ed Davender and Rex Chapman both topping the 20-point plateau. Davender played all 45 of the game's minutes.
This was early in the era of the three-point shot and Indiana did not make a field goal from behind the deep line.
43,601 fans were in attendance at the Hoosier Dome for the game. This was part of the Big Four Classic.
Kentucky 92, Indiana 90 | 1975 Mideast Region Final, Dayton (Ohio)
Indiana was riding a 34-game winning streak and these were the top two teams in the Mideast region. Kentucky's two-point win over the Hoosiers was full of dramatics and intense moments, including a Bob Knight technical foul.
Mike Flynn scored 22 points for Kentucky and Indiana's Kent Benson poured in 33 in a losing effort.
The win was Kentucky's revenge for a loss in the same game -- the Mideast region finals -- two years earlier.
Indiana 90, Kentucky 89 | 1971, Louisville (Ky.)
This contest went two overtime periods and the one-point Hoosier win over the Wildcats was a major upset in the Commonwealth, albeit at a neutral site. Indiana was unranked but Bob Knight's team took down No. 7 Kentucky on the back of Steve Downing's 47 points and 25 rebounds.
Indiana pulled down a whopping 59 rebounds (to Kentucky's 44)
Kentucky 95, Indiana 93 | 1970, Bloomington (Ind.)
This was an overtime win in a regular season game for one of Adolph Rupp's last Kentucky teams. The Cats entered the game ranked fifth by the Associated Press, and Lou Watson's Hoosiers were ranked No. 11 in the same poll.
Tom Parker scored 24 points on a balanced, high-powered offensive day for Kentucky. Indiana's George McInnis turned in an eye-popping 38 points (on 31 FG attempts and 12-19 from the line).
It was Rupp's fifth consecutive win over Indiana.
