The Kentucky basketball team got a little early edition of midnight madness late Tuesday night as five-star Arkansas shooting guard Archie Goodwin announced on Twitter that he's committed to the Wildcats.
Goodwin, ranked as the nation's No. 12 prospect, announced on his Twitter page just before midnight EST on Tuesday: "If you don't know by now, I'm a Wildcat!!!"
One of the nation's most dynamic dribble-penetrating guards and perhaps the nation's very best transition guard, Goodwin is the first commitment for John Calipari in the 2012 recruiting class.
"I chose them because I felt like I could accomplish what I need to for myself," Goodwin told Rivals.com analyst Eric Bossi "And be a contender for a championship."
"... I think I could bring energy (to UK's lineup). Scoring, defense and leadership to the team."
Goodwin, a 6-foot-4, 181-pound player for Sylvan Hills High Schools in Little Rock, chose the Cats over, most notably, the home-state Arkansas Razorbacks. He also considered Memphis, Connecticut and Kansas and had offers from dozens of other elite NCAA Division I programs.
Goodwin was visited in Arkansas by Calipari last Thursday.
He is expected to attend UK's Big Blue Madness on an official visit.
Bossi on Goodwin
Bossi had this to write about Goodwin:
"Blessed with what is most likely the fastest first step in high school basketball, excellent length and creativity off the dribble, Goodwin would seem to be a perfect match for Kentucky.
"Goodwin's game is all about creation via the dribble and he's a natural scorer who is always in attack mode."
Ellis decision on Wednesday
Could UK get another five-star recruit in less than 24 hours? It's possible.
Forward Perry Ellis of Wichita, Kan., will announce his college decision at 3:45 p.m. EST Wednesday at his high school.
Ellis is considering UK, Kansas, Kansas State and Wichita State.
Most observers have expected Ellis will be difficult to pull out of his home state, particularly away from Bill Self's Jayhawks.
But Calipari just plucked Goodwin out of Arkansas and away from the Razorbacks, and it's hard to ever count out the coach who has dominated the national recruiting landscape since arriving at UK.
