Commitments dot Saturday and early Sunday landscape
Just like every other weekend this fall, this weekend has been full of commitments. Among the weekend's winners so far are Marquette and Oklahoma State who each landed four-star targets on Saturday.
Hill picks Marquette during visit
Friday night, Buzz Williams and Marquette hosted a huge contingent of visitors for their Marquette Madness festivities. In that group was perhaps their top remaining 2014 target, shooting guard Ahmed Hill.
A 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Augusta (Ga.) Aquinas who currently ranks No. 69 in the Rivals150, Hill had been considered a lean to Marquette headed into his visit. That sentiment was confirmed on Saturday afternoon when the four-star prospect committed during his visit.
Hill is a scorer with good wing size and solid all-around skill. Due to an up and down summer, his stock took a bit of a hit but the tools to be a very productive Big East player are all there. He has good range on his jumper, good size and handles the ball pretty well.
Others on campus for Marquette Madness included official visitors Marial Shayok and Tory Miller. From the class of 2015, five-star targets Diamond Stone and Charles Matthews were on hand along with four-star commitment Nick Noskowiak.
Solomon goes with Oklahoma State
Just four months ago, Mitchell Solomon was pretty much an unknown. Even in his home state of Oklahoma. Now, the 6-foot-9 power forward from Bixby (Okla.) High is a four-star prospect, the No. 72 player in the country and an Oklahoma State commitment.
One of the better stories of the 2013 summer circuit, the skilled scorer emerged as one of the best big men in the country. He is comfortable operating on either block, scores with both hands around the basket and is a reliable jump shooter with range to the three point line.
Stylistically, Solomon is a bit of a departure from the types of big men that Travis Ford has been bringing in. At OSU, Ford has loaded up on lengthy, high energy rebounders whose chief skill is athleticism. While no slouch of an athlete, Solomon should add a new element in Stillwater.
Solomon is the Cowboys second four-star commitment from 2014 and joins shooting guard Jared Terrell.
More weekend commitments
Johnny Jones and the LSU Tigers have been hunting point guards. Early Sunday, they got their guy when three-star floor general Jalyn Patterson made a commitment.
A native of Georgia who now attends Montverde (Fla.) Academy, Patterson is a sturdy floor general and fringe Rivals150 level player. He gets the ball to teammates, is willing to knock home a jumper and does a good job of limiting his mistakes.
Wofford snuck into the state of Florida and stole a three-star prospect. Speedy point guard Derrick Brooks of Bartow (Fla.) High committed and is a very nice pickup. Although he isn't a great shooter, Brooks has tremendous speed and can be a very physical defender. Point guard options are quite limited right now and Brooks is a guy that many programs would have turned to during the winter had Wofford not been able to lock him up.
