Ole Miss website says Cutcliffe not a candidate

There are conflicting reports out of Mississippi about whether or not Ole Miss head coach David Cutcliffe will become the head coach at Kentucky.

Media outlets in Mississippi have been reporting Saturday that Cutcliffe has agreed to become the UK head coach.

UK officials would neither confirm nor deny those reports Saturday.

An article on the Ole Miss website, however, said Cutcliffe was not a candidate for the UK position.

According to the Ole Miss website, Cutcliffe met with his longtime friend, Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart, Friday in what he called "a friendly exchange" about the Kentucky program, which was initiated by Barnhart.

"I am happy to be at The University of Mississippi and have not entertained any thoughts of leaving," Cutcliffe said. "My family is extremely happy to be a part of the Oxford and Ole Miss community. We are committed to strive for excellence in every phase of our program, and I am appreciative of the support we have received since we became a part of Ole Miss."

The Wildcats have been searching for a head coach since Guy Morriss resigned Dec. 9 to become the head coach at Baylor University.

In four years at Ole Miss, Cutcliffe has a record of 29-19. Prior to taking the job at Ole Miss, Cutcliffe was an assistant coach for 17 years with the University of Tennessee, the last six as the Volunteers' offensive coordinator.

The Rebels will play Nebraska in the Independence Bowl Dec. 27 in Shreveport, La.
