UK exploring possible clerical error in Strickland arrest

Rod Strickland was arrested Thursday, and the University of Kentucky is exploring the possibility that one of his charges is the result of a clerical error.

Strickland, who serves as special assistant to head coach John Calipari was stopped at 8:53 a.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Maxwell Street, near the UK campus.

He was cited for driving on a DUI-suspended license in addition to failing to signal a lane change and having an expired registration and plates, according to a Lexington Metro Police arrest citation. Strickland was released less than three hours later and was on the UK campus at about 11:30 a.m.

Strickland's license was suspended for 12 months following a DUI arrest in September 2010. Fayette County court records show Strickland as having no further arrests during the time his license was scheduled to be suspended.

UK released the following statement early Thursday afternoon:

"Rod Strickland was pulled over this morning in Lexington on a routine traffic stop on the way to the office. According to police reports, he was pulled over for failure to signal and for driving with a suspended license. According to Strickland, his vehicle was properly registered and he produced his driver's license at the scene. We are currently gathering information on whether his license was suspended due to a clerical error which led to his arrest."

Lexington Division of Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said Thursday afternoon that the status of Strickland's license still was suspended. It is not the responsibility of the police to update that status if it changes, Roberts said. The police followed proper procedure in arresting Strickland based on that information, Roberts said.

A clerk at Fayette District Court had no information on Strickland's license. The only paperwork available, she said, stemmed from Strickland's 2010 arrest.
