Three And Out: Tressel needs to go
Here is this week's "Three And Out," a weekly feature that will provide a quick but opinionated take from Tom Dienhart on three hot topics.
1. Tressel needs to go. Jim Tressel, meet Woody Hayes. They are Ohio State icons who led the school to national championships and Big Ten titles while coaching Heisman winners. No doubt, Hayes and Tressel forever will be linked by on-field greatness. They also will be linked forever by off-field shame. Hayes socked a Clemson player in the 1978 Gator Bowl and was fired. Since Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee is "worried" about Tressel firing him
2. Buyer beware. What do Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer, Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez have in common? They all are elite NFL quarterbacks who did not rely on running the ball to be successful college quarterbacks. The same can't be said for two top quarterback prospects in the 2011 NFL draft. Cam Newton and Jake Locker relied heavily on athletic ability and running skills to thrive in college. And that's why I'd be scared to death to draft any of those guys with a high pick. Not to say Newton or Locker won't be good NFL quarterbacks one day, but I think the odds are against either being an elite passer who will justify being a first-round pick.
3. New hope for Ole Miss. News that Ole Miss quarterback Barry Brunetti earlier this week was granted a waiver to play immediately after transferring from West Virginia was huge for the Rebels. Brunetti, who wanted to be closer to his ailing mother in Memphis, is the most dynamic and talented quarterback on campus. And Ole Miss needs dynamic and talented players. Brunetti, a sophomore, will compete with Zack Stoudt and Randall Mackey for the starting job and could end up winning it. Coach Houston Nutt needs a playmaker under center, and Brunetti could be his man.
