Ohio kicker has options

Chillicothe (Ohio) Chillicothe kicker Drew Basil has always been one of the more intriguing special teams players in the state of Ohio, but he didn't always have the options in terms of an offer list that would warrant his abilities.

While it may not have been easy in the early goings of his recruiting process, Basil, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound kicker and punter, now has more options than he previously thought was possible.

"I didn't think I would ever get to five scholarship offers," Basil said.

However, Basil did just that. Picking up a recent offer from Ohio State, Basil now sports five offers which includes Purdue, Cincinnati, Kentucky, and Air Force in addition to the big offer from the Buckeyes.

"I am just really excited because the way I look at it, the five offers that I have and none of them are bad academic schools," Basil said. "I know that I will be getting a great education no matter where I go."

Basil was in attendance at Ohio State's camp over the weekend and enjoyed his time in Columbus, which subsequently followed with an offer from the host Buckeyes.

"I was at their camp and pretty much what happened was after the camp I spoke with (assistant recruiting coordinator) Greg Gillum and got his phone number and I just kept in contact with him," Basil said. "I ended up talking with him last Monday and he told me to call him on this past Saturday and that's whenever they offered me.

"After I got of the phone with him he told me to call Coach (Jim Tressel) and I did that," Basil added. "The coolest part about that call was when I called him (Tressel) answered, 'Drew Basil how are you?' and I thought it was really cool that he knew I was calling."

Despite being an in-state recruit, Basil wasn't sitting back waiting for an Ohio State offer. While there was no question that he wanted to receive one from the Buckeyes, he was more focused on preparing himself to perform well.

"I really honestly haven't been waiting for an offer from Ohio State," Basil said. "What I was expecting to do was go up to their camp and show the best that I could."

While Basil has already made appearances on Ohio State's camps, it is the last school out of the five that have offered him that he has yet to visit. This Thursday, however, Basil will be in Columbus again to take in everything the school has to offer.

"I have seen four of the five schools that have offered me and Ohio State is the last school that I need to look at," Basil said. "I am going to get a pretty good overview of what is going on at Ohio State. I am going to see the dorms, the facilities, the cafeterias, meeting with academic advisors, the strength coach and administrators and stuff like that."

Basil isn't quite sure if more schools will send an offer his way, but he anticipates his decision will come down to one of the five schools that have already offered.

"I am not expecting to get any more offers, though it would be nice to get some more," Basil said. "My choice will most likely come down to one of these five schools."

Though he has a pretty good idea of where he will eventually choose from, Basil hasn't ranked the five schools that have offered. Instead, he hopes to see Ohio State and evaluate everything once he has a good idea about all the different schools.

"Right now the main thing I am looking at is if I will be comfortable living there for the next four or five years because I mean that is going to be happening," Basil said.

Basil has been personally coached by former Buckeye placekicker Tim Williams, a four-year starter at Ohio State from 1990 to 1993. Basil said Williams was exciting to hear about his most recent offer.

"He was excited," Basil said. "I actually called him after I found out and I am not going to use the same words as him, but he said 'Are you kidding me?'"

Ohio State is recruiting Basil for punting and placekicking, though Basil said he thinks the Buckeyes prefer him more as a place kicker.

At his visit at Ohio State Thursday, Basil wont be working out for the Buckeye coaching staff because he will be there solely to take in all the sites.

"I am just going to get to see everything academically and facility-wise," Basil said. "I am excited about everything because I really didn't expect to have this many offers."
