Previewing Rising Stars: Offense

This week, the stars will rise as the competition among some of the nation's best players weeds out the highly rated from the overrated.

The USC Rising Stars Camp is established as the most prestigious camp of the summer, and this year's event should provide a clearer look into the future of Trojan football.

While the camp's roster mirrors three-quarters of the Rivals100 in March, the pretenders and the players begin to come into focus in early June. Names have risen and fallen from the Trojans recruiting board, but one position has maintained a consistent pool of prospects fighting for a single scholarship offer.

I've got a Golden Ticket

At USC, you don't need to be a starter in order to star in the NFL. Kansas City Chief's signal-caller Matt Cassel's may have brought as more notoriety to the quarterback position at USC than Carson Palmer.

Thus, scholarship offers at the quarterback position have been elusive this spring. And by offers, we mean offer. Lakewood (Calif.) four-star quarterback Jesse Scroggins appears to sit at the top of the board.

At 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, Scroggins is a pro-style quarterback whose game centers on accuracy and touch. Standing out as a passer at several camps this spring, Scroggins currently lists USC, Florida and Tennessee as his three favorite schools.

USC is the only one of the three that has yet to offer Scroggins a scholarship, which says a lot about his interest in the Trojans. If a scholarship offer for Scroggins does come through Wednesday or Thursday, his recruitment could end shortly after.

Of course, there will be competition. Among the lead pack expected to compete with Scroggins will be Kingsburgh (Calif.) quarterback Tyler Bray, Danville (Calif.) quarterback Brett Nottingham and San Clemente (Calif.) quarterback Chase Rettig. Of the group, Bray is the only one who attended the Skills Camp two weeks ago.

Could steal the show: San Diego (Calif.) junior quarterback Evan Crower
