Week in review: St. Thomas Aquinas

We were on hand Thursday afternoon as the defending national champions, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, hosted their annual Blue and Gold scrimmage in front of nearly 50 college coaches. The week before we also took in the controlled scrimmage STA held. Here is a look at the top performers of both scrimmages.

Giovanni Bernard - 2010 Running back:

The 5 foot 9, 200-pound Bernard broke a couple of long runs in both scrimmages. He showed off his ability to catch passes out of the backfield in the Blue and Gold scrimmage taking a screen pass to the end zone. He looks to be the best running back in South Florida.

Lamarcus Joyner - 2010 Wide Receiver:

The 5 foot 8, 165-pound Joyner only played wide receiver in both scrimmages. In the Blue and Gold scrimmage Joyner to a screen pass and exploded down the sideline for a touchdown. In the controlled scrimmage he tore up the first team defense with 3 long receptions. If he plans to play both ways he will have to improve his conditioning as he was gasping for air at the end of the scrimmages. He is St. Thomas Aquinas best wide receiver this spring.

Keion Payne - 2010 Cornerback:

The 6 foot, 160-pound Payne was the best defensive back at both of the scrimmages. He looked very smooth playing corner at both scrimmages. Miami recently offered Payne and Florida had 4 coaches watching his every move during individual drills.

Jermaine Barton - 2010 Offensive Tackle:

The 6 foot 6, 270-pound Barton currently has offers from FIU and Connecticut. Barton has improved so much in the past year as he moves real well for a player his size. Look for his offer list to continue grow.

Cody Riggs - 2010 Cornerback:

The 5 foot 9, 160-pound Riggs struggled in covering Joyner the 2 scrimmages. He did battle back and come up with a pick at the end of the first scrimmage.

Reynaldo Kirton - 2010 Safety:

The 6 foot 1, 190-pound Kirton is an impressive looking athlete and even more impressive in the classroom. With a 4.63 gpa Kirton will have a lot of college options available.

Underclassmen standouts:

Jacob Rudock - 2011 Quarterback:

The 6 foot 2, 170-pound Rudock was the most impressive quarterback in both scrimmages. He has good mobility and a strong arm.

Kenneth Hankerson - 2011 Linebacker:

The 6 foot, 205-pound Hankerson starts at one of the outside linebacker position. He is a good athlete and showed an ability to make plays in space.

Jelani Hamilton - 2012 Defensive end:

The 6 foot 4, 215-pound Hamilton was in the backfield all day in both of the scrimmages. He has long arms and is still growing into his body. Hamilton looks as if he will be the next star to come out of STA's program.
