Smith anchors Mount Carmel 'D' in playoff shutout

The Mount Carmel Caravan are marching ahead to the semifinal round in the Illinois Class 7A state playoffs and Michigan State recruit Enoch Smith Jr. is a big reason for it.

This past Saturday afternoon, while the Spartans took care of business in Lincoln, Neb., Smith and Minnesota-bound defensive tackle Steven Richardson led a dominating defensive effort in a 7-0 road victory against Downers Grove North.

The game was played in a steady rain nearly the entire time, which hindered each team's offensive gameplans somewhat, keeping the ball on the ground quite a bit. Still, Downers Grove's Carsten Field has artificial turf and still had pretty decent footing.

What it didn't provide to the host Trojans was an answer for the 6-foot-2, 275-pound Smith and 6-foot, 290-pound Richardson.

"They're frickin' good," Downers Grove coach John Houser said afterward, while wearing a University of Michigan sweatshirt. "You can put that quote in there, 'They're frickin' good.' Those kids who are going to Michigan State and Minnesota gobbled us up a little bit. We tried to go with a little two tight ends for max protection and that was just to get even with those kids up front."
