Mercer owns the glass in 78-74 win
Head coach Jeff Lebo was blunt in describing Auburn's 78-74 loss to Mercer Wednesday.
"I give Mercer credit," Lebo said. "They just annihilated us on the glass."
His assessment was right on the money.
The Bears came into Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum and outrebounded the Tigers 46-21 just three days after doing the same at Alabama. On Sunday night in Tuscaloosa, Mercer beat the Tide 72-69, holding a 56-38 rebounding advantage.
"We watched them and watched them against Alabama and, of course, (rebounding) was the emphasis coming in," Lebo said. "They just destroyed us on the glass. Offensive glass, defensive glass - we didn't get many second shots."
Despite the rebounding struggles, Auburn still had several chances to win the game down the stretch. Mercer guard Daniel Kusnyer made 1-of-2 free throws to give the Bears a 76-74 lead with 9 seconds remaining.
