Looking ahead to James Young's 2014 season
Rochester Hills, Mich. (Rochester)
Preview Podcast: Publisher Brett Dawson and staff writers T.J. Walker and Aaron Smith break down their expectations of James Young.
Rewind: Young averaged 27.4 points, 14.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game as a senior at Rochester High School. A natural scorer, Young is as comfortable driving to the hoop as he is pulling up from three-point range, and his scoring and rebounding skills helped make him a McDonald's All-American selection.
Fast Forward: The most important offseason goal for Young is to get on campus. He graduated too late for summer school at Kentucky, and he may still have academic requirements to complete before he's eligible. Young's being counted on as a freshman to play a key role, whether it's as a scoring option off the bench or as a starter on the wing.
John Calipari says: "James Young gives you that 6-7 wing who flat can shoot the ball. Some of the issues… . Again, we shot a high percentage. When you looked at our numbers from last year, our defensive numbers, our shot-blocking numbers, our offensive percentages, you would say we should have won more games. But, we weren't as skilled as we needed to be, especially at crunch time. We weren't as skilled. We weren't as physically dominating as my teams in the past. This team should be."
