July 23, 2012The Red Raiders added their 12th commit of the 2013 class on Monday with the addition of Mesquite (Texas) Dallas Christian athlete Justis Nelson. Nelson, who attended the Red Raiders' one-day camp in Lubbock last Thursday, felt at home in Lubbock with Tommy Tuberville's coaching staff.
"It was probably the coaches and just being around the coaches," Nelson said. "They're really welcoming. We were joking around a lot, had a lot of laughs. My mom liked them a lot too. She thought they were really good people.
Nelson's mother, a police chief in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, really enjoyed her visit to Lubbock, too. After weighing everything she'd seen on the visit and heard from the coaching staff, she gave her son a green light to pledge to Tech.
"She's a Dallas Police chief," he said. "She liked Tech a lot when we went down there. She analyzed it pretty hard and made sure it was what I wanted and was best for me. She definitely made sure it was the right decision for me."
Nelson is ecstatic about becoming the latest member of the Red Raider football team.
"I'm really excited to go to Tech," he said. "It's definitely one of the colleges that I've been looking at and watching play all the time in the Big 12 on TV. I'll get a good education, and it's not too far from home. It's a great school."
Nelson committed to Tech over offers from Air Force and Harvard. He was recruited to the South Plains by offensive line coach Chris Thomsen and graduate assistant Jeff Howard.
