July 17, 2012Jon Hood
Madisonville, Ky. (North Hopkins)
Preview Podcast: Publisher Brett Dawson, Recruiting Editor Steve Jones and Staff Writers T.J. Walker and Aaron Smith break down their expectations of Jon Hood.
Rewind: Hood sat out last season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in summer workouts. In two seasons, he's played 50 games. As a sophomore in 2010-11, he saw action in 33 of UK's 38 games, averaging a little less than a point and a rebound per game. Hood was a prolific scorer in high school. He averaged 29.4 points per game as a senior at North Hopkins High en route to Mr. Basketball honors.
Fast Forward: Few players enter the season with as many questions as Hood. It's not even certain yet if this will be his final season at Kentucky, as he could apply for a medical redshirt year that likely would grant him an additional season of eligibility. It's also fair to wonder if he can crack the Cats' rotation. Though he has more game experience than anyone on the roster, Hood has played sparingly in his first two seasons, and as usual, UK's roster is stacked with high school talent. During his rehab last year, Hood was adamant that he'd return and be a contributor, but in his limited opportunities so far, he's been unable to show a hint that he might ultimately prove an important rotation player.
John Calipari says: " My stuff is year-to-year. I want to know from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. What happens over a three- or four-year period, what you see is, like a Jon Hood, I look at him and he was a young pimple-faced little (kid) and now you look at him and he's got half a beard and you're saying 'Oh my gosh.'"
