The Latest: Coaches: The SEC Will Be Much-Improved — 6/29/2009 The numbers were sickening. The SEC's basketball coaches knew how tough their league was -- they're the ones that had to play in it every day. They knew it was a case where every time your team walked onto the floor, it got punched in the mouth.[details]

HEADER JODIE MEEKS Shooting Guard University of Kentucky Wildcats #23 6:03.0-212 Norcross, Georgia Norcross High School
OVERVIEW Meeks didn't register on the radar of most pro evaluators prior to his junior season. His meteoric rise caught the attention of the media, earning numerous All-American honors, and the focus of NBA general managers.
New Kentucky head coach John Calipari has made it known that instant success for the Wildcats next season greatly hinges on Meeks' decision on whether to return to the university or turn professional. The nation's seventh-leading scorer produced three of the top four single-game scoring performances in the nation in 2008-09 and the new staff would love to see the "gunslinger" shooting it up on the court again. His 54-point performance vs. Tennessee in 2009 was the most points by an SEC player since 1989 (55 by Chris Jackson of LSU vs. Ole Miss).
Meeks' 854 points scored in 2008-09 not only ranked seventh nationally, but were good for second on the school single-season record list and eighth in Southeastern Conference history. He had the most points by an SEC player in one season since Chris Jackson of Louisiana State in 1988-89 (889 points). His average of 23.7 points per game placed fifth on the Kentucky annual record chart, as his 117 3-point field goals set the UK season-record (tied for third in conference annals).
The shooting guard's ability to draw contact was critical as he was close to automatic at the foul line, where he canned 90.2 percent of his attempts. That percentage ranks third in school history while his career success percentage from the charity stripe of .889 set Kentucky and SEC all-time marks.
The league's opposing coaches were relieved when Meeks announced on April 7 that he was entering his name into the 2009 NBA Draft. The 53rd player in school history to amass more than 1,000 points in a career (32nd at 1,246) will still give a few SEC coaches restless nights until June 15, as he did not initially hire an agent, leaving the door open to return Kentucky in 2009-10.
At Norcross High School, Meeks led his team to the Class AAAAA state championship, the first in school history, scoring 32 points and pulling down six rebounds in his final game. The 2006 AJC Player of the Year added Gwinnett Daily Post Player of the Year, Atlanta Tip-off Club Metro Player of the Year and Player of the Month (February) honors as a senior.
Meeks was also named to the GHSA All-Star team, as he led the North team to their first victory in over three years. He averaged 23.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game during his senior campaign. After a heavy recruiting war, the guard decided to enroll at Kentucky, turning down scholarship offers from such teams as Alabama, Florida, Illinois, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State.
During his first season at Kentucky, Meeks earned Collegeinsider.com Freshman All-American honors. He appeared in 34 games, starting just once, but was usually the first reserve off the bench. He averaged 22.1 minutes and 8.7 points per game, finishing fourth on the team in scoring. He reached double figures 16 times, including 14 of last 18 games and eight consecutive, as he paced the Wildcats with an .897 percentage from the foul line. 44 of 95 field goals made came from 3-point range.
Meeks' sophomore season is one he'd like to forget. He was plagued by injury issues and missed a total of 20 games. He was sidelined for six weeks after suffering a stress fracture in the pelvic area in early November and sat out 13 more games at the end of the year, including 12 SEC contests, due to a strained hip flexor. He started five of 11 games in which he played, producing a pair of 20-point outings, but finished with just 8.8 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Fully recovered from injury woes, Meeks put together one of the finest seasons ever by a Wildcat in 2008-09. He started all 36 games, becoming just the second player in school history to score 800 points (854) in a season. He made 40.6 percent of his 3-point attempts, averaging 3.3 treys per game, 19th-best in the NCAA. He also became only the third Wildcat to ever make more than 90 percent of his free throw attempts (90.2 percent) in a season, garnering All-American second-team recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, in addition to being named an All-Southeastern Conference first-team pick.

PERSONAL Business Marketing major...Son of Orestes and Margaret Meeks...Born 8/21/87 in Nashville, Tennessee...Resides in Norcross, Georgia.
SCOUTING REPORT Positives: Lacks the size you look for in a two-guard and is not quick enough to defend point guards, but compensates with good strength and aggression drawing contact on the way to the basket, making the defense pay for mistakes, as he is an outstanding shooter from the foul line (89-percent foul shooter during his career)...Would be a nice fit coming off the bench as a role-playing combo guard?Shows high-level productivity as a scorer, but lacks the wingspan and length to effectively defend...Well-built athlete who crashes the boards and it is rare to see him get boxed out or shoved around when charging to the basket (ranked second in the NCAA in transition with 5.52 transition scores per game)...Has good ability to finish around the rim (23.7 points per game in 2008-09) and is very good shooting off the dribble, along with showing good form to fade back and deliver a soft jumper consistently...Has legitimate range from the perimeter, hitting on a career-high 40.6 percent (seventh in school history) of his 3-point attempts as a junior...Has just average athleticism, but does a good job driving to the basket coming off screens, especially in half-court sets...His body has developed and he shows more than enough power to combat two-guard types at the NBA level. Capable of getting into the passing lane (48 steals in 36 games) and wants to play defense...Shows good basketball IQ, as he takes what the defense gives him, but is not really a great ball-handler, which will prevent him from seeing minutes at the point in the NBA...Has a fluid and quick release and gets the necessary elevation to make his shots over taller defenders...Efficient executing his shot with an opponent in his face (made 36.4 percent of his contested shots in 2008-09)...Reads defenses well and makes great use of screens, proving to be one of the better spot-up shooters in the NCAA...Lacks fluid hip snap yet he manages to cut hard to the basket against double-team defense and traps...Has a nice straight-line burst coming off the dribble and utilizes a nice array of fakes and hesitation moves to create room against tight man defense...Uses his strength well on backdoor cuts, but is best when pulling up and using pump fakes from the perimeter to get the defender to commit too early before he executes his shot...Needs to protect the ball better but can control the ball in iso and pick-and-roll situations?Has very good leaping ability (37-inch vertical jump) and elevation on his drives to the rim, gliding through the air to draw fouls...Despite his lack of size, he likes to work in the paint and uses his slashing agility well to get to the basket...Adequate ball handler, but has good, soft hands to grab the one-bounce pass and drive to the rim...Has a good concept for using angles in his drive to the basket and shows good change of direction agility...Has large hands and can slam one-handed dunks and control the ball against slap-happy defenders?Best when he sets his feet first before shooting...Intelligent player who has the ability to rotate to several positions, depending on the offensive scheme...Explodes off the ground and times leaps well to get around slower opponent in attempts to secure the rebound...Has a nice array of head fakes to commit the defender to going to the air while he darts underneath after taking the opponent's side...Good finisher in transition and can dunk the ball when he's the last outlet on the fast break.
Negatives: Just an adequate ball handler, losing the ball too often as a junior...Does not have the foot speed or lateral agility to defend quicker perimeter guards and must do a better job of staying in front of his man (allows a side too often) when playing defense...Lacks the size of an NBA two-guard, but until he can prove to be a much better ball handler (has problems getting to the rim when playing in the half-court action) and passer, he won't get too many looks at the point...Gets a little too reliant on his pull-up jumper and perimeter range (will drive hard to the basket, but his lack of mobility sees his struggle to get good separation coming off the dribble)...For a player with good offensive basketball IQ, he is too often caught out of position on the defensive end and is generally a step behind when his man gets by him...Classic rhythm shooter who is very dangerous when he gets in a groove, but will continue shooting even when his shot doesn't fall and needs to show that he can be at least an adequate facilitator.
Compares To: JAMAL CRAWFORD, Golden State -- Meeks can make a nice living off in-the-gym range, his pull-up jumper and ability to draw contact, as he's an almost automatic when he gets to the foul line. He has great perimeter range and compensates for a lack of size with his strength driving to the basket. He is a marginal defender who does not have the lateral mobility to defend point guards, and also lacks the size you look for in a classic NBA-type 2-guard. This could relegate him to role duty as a combo player. With John Calipari taking over the Kentucky program, Meeks could greatly enhance his draft stock by returning to school rather than remaining in the draft, where his value could be in the late-first or early second-round range.
