Welch planning more stops in Madison
Entering his second full season as tight ends coach at the University of Wisconsin, Joe Rudolph has been busy searching the state of Ohio, specifically the Cincinnati area, hoping to cash-in on the wealth of talent that overwhelms the Buckeye State.
In 2009, Rudolph struck gold by landing prospects Pat Muldoon, Jeff Duckworth and Brian Wozniak.
Monday night, BadgerBlitz.com caught up with one of Rudolph's 2010 targets, Alex Welch, to discuss his interest in the Wisconsin Badgers.
"I've had an offer from Wisconsin for about a month now," said the Cincinnati (Ohio) Elder tight end. "I was getting some mail from them and I followed up and sent them some film. Then they called the school and told my coaches that they were really interested. The coaches wanted to see me first before they offered a scholarship.
"So, I went up there on a Sunday. We drove up there and met with Coach Rudolph and Coach (Bret) Bielema. During our conversation with them they offered me a scholarship, that was really exciting."
Welch, who stands 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, has built a solid relationship with Rudolph and plans to visit Madison a few more times before making any sort of decision on his future.
"Coach Rudolph is a great guy," he said. "He's been to my school a few times. I've been able to speak with him and we've exchanged e-mails a lot. I talk to him often. He's a really good coach and person.
"It was my first trip to Madison and it was very impressive," Welch continued. "I love the way they use the tight end in their offense. I'm definitely going on more visits to Wisconsin that is for sure. I really enjoyed my visit."
Although Welch currently holds 20 offers, he admittedly hopes to see one more from his home-state Buckeyes in the near future.
"Ohio State came into school last week. They might offer in the next few weeks," he explained. "I'm a Buckeye guy. That doesn't mean I would go there; growing up I always liked Notre Dame and Ohio State."
As a junior, Welch recorded 415 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
Welch one of two known tight ends to be offered by Wisconsin in the 2010 class, the other being C.J. Fiedorowicz from Illinois.
