Spartans after Ohio speedster
Michigan State is looking to sign a dynamic ball carrier to the class of 2010. One of the players they are actively recruiting is Braylon Heard of powerhouse high school Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown, Ohio. SpartanMag.com caught up with the game breaking running back last night and has some details on his recruitment.
Heard is a 5-foot-11, 180-pounds speedster that is rated a 4-star recruits and the #192 player in the nation by Rivals.com. Michigan State early offered Heard a full scholarship and the Spartans are not along in their assesment of him as a high-level recruits
"I have been offered by Michigan State, Penn State, Nebraska, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Ohio, Akron, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Kent State, North Carolina State and Maryland. I also went to Pitt's Junior Day."
With double digit offers on the table, including Big Ten heavyweights Michigan State and Penn State, Heard is well on his way to being one of th4 most sought after prospects in the Midwest.
Last year as a junior Heard excelled on both sides of teh ball. In addition to being a top flight running back, Heard also is a tremendous cover cornerback. He was actually named All-State for his performance on the defensive side of the ball. We asked him what position he is being recruited for.
Running back he said. That is thr positions teams say they want me for.
Michigan State's interest in Heard as a running back makes sense when you consider last year they took two running backs that are considered more power type backs. This year they are looking for a speedster ho can not only run the ball, but also catch the ball out of the backfield and occaisonnlayy line-up as a wideout and be a mismatch against linebackers.
Despite an impressive list of early offer, Heard indicated that he is not in a hurry to make his decision at this time.
"I am just taking my time right now he said. I am not really sure about when i will make my choice."
Right now, Heard is focused on track season for Cardinal Mooney. Heard has clocked an sub 11.0 100-meters and hopes to lead his team this year in both the sprints and the relays. Once this summer roles around, Heard may take some unofficla visits to the schools that are showing him the most interest.
Michigan State has strong ties to the Youngstown area and Cardinal Mooney High Schools. The primary recruiter of Heard for Michigan State State is Youngstown native Pat Narduzzi and Head Coach Mark Dantonio worked at Youngstown State under Jim Tressel.
Though it is still early in the recruiting process for Heard, the Spartans high-level of interest cannot hurt their chances with him. Coach Dantonuio has made recruting Ohio a top priority. The Spartans just graduated a tremendos Ohio running back in Javon Ringer and would certainly like to ad another Ohio standout to the roster.
