White Station Tops Melrose in a Thriller
University of Memphis signee Adonis Thomas scored 34 points in an inspired performance, but his Melrose Golden Wildcats still fell to the visiting White Station Spartans Friday night in Orange Mound.
The game was a taut affair throughout, with the Spartans holding the edge 13-12 to end the first quarter, 31-29 at the half, and 42-40 after three. No lead ever surpassed White Station's early seven-point bulge, an White Station bookended the 13-12 first quarter with a 13-12 fourth quarter, as well.
It was a physical contest with plenty of fouls called on both sides. Melrose point guard Devonte Hampton even had to change out of his #10 uniform top into teammate Cornelius Sturghill's #3 because there was blood on Hampton's shirt in the third quarter. The referees alternated between allowing physical play and calling touch fouls, which made the proceedings entertaining for fans but rather difficult for the players to adjust to what was being whistled.
